On Friday April 23rd we were delighted to host a live conversation with mindful geoscientist Clément Kostov.

Clément joined us for a timely conversation about Earth Day, ecology, sustainable development and mindful attitudes with studio BE faculty member Janine Tandy.

In case you missed it, you can watch the whole conversation here:

Meet Clément Kostov, in his own words:

I’m a geophysicist by profession, recently retired after a 30 year international career in the oil and gas industry. My retirement has been a welcome opportunity to change pace and settle in France closer to family. Discovering studio BE’s community last fall started a wonderful experience in many ways, including this participation in the Friday webinar series.

My interest in geophysics and earth sciences was sparkled during my undergraduate studies in France in the early 1980s. A desire to combine science work and an international career led me to complete a PhD degree in geophysics, and then to work in industry as scientist and manager.

During my career I met remarkable people from all parts of the world working as teams on hard scientific and engineering problems. Now I enjoy the opportunity to read broadly on environmental issues. There is a lot going on, and I’m really pleased to observe the recent emphasis on environmentalism, sustainability and clean energy topics in universities, in industry and in professional societies. Business involvement was needed alongside social and government policies, and finally we see it taking shape, adding momentum to activism for sustainable development.

As we celebrate Earth Day 2021, let’s acknowledge the many inspiring examples of actions taken to protect the environment around us, as well as the essential role of mindful attitudes, individual and collective, for the way ahead.

.

Friday's conversation drew upon Earth Day's inspiration, including insights from BBC’s natural history filmmaker David Attenborough and reflections from scientist James Lovelock, inventor of the Gaia theory.

Inspired by our April 9th conversation with Josh Snell and Manny Rionda, Clément and Janine came together to envision collective well-being and cultivate practical activism to support ecological wellness in communities, both global and local.

Thanks for joining us, Clément! We loved learning from you.
